Project International Coordination

Gestos – HIV+, Comunication and Gender – is a Brazilian non-governmental organization founded in 1993, in Recife, state of Pernambuco, that promotes positive actions towards facing HIV/AIDS through the guarantee of basic human rights of populations infected and affected by the epidemic. Gestos has both grassroots, local level, basic services such as psychological, legal and educational support to people living with HIV/AIDS; and international advocacy work that tries and influence national and global governance bodies to focus on the importance of women's sexual and reproductive health and rights as a pre-condition for effective strategies and actions towards curbing the spread of the virus and growth of the epidemic.

Alessandra Nilo is the Executive Coordinator and co-founder of Gestos. Ms Nilo has seventeen years working in the field of HIV/AIDS advocacy, with work on different geopolitical levels. She is the current Regional Secretary of LACCASO – Latin America and Caribbean Council of AIDS Services Organizations – as well as the coordinator of this UNGASS-AIDS Monitoring project. Besides following up international resolutions and trying and making governments accountable for their commitments, Ms Nilo focuses on the urging issue of gender-based violence and the growth trend of the HIV epidemic among women and girls in the whole world.
